Borgleden
NOBorgleden is one of the St. Olav Ways, the historic pilgrim paths to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The route begins at the Swedish border near Halden and runs for almost 190 kilometers through the rolling cultural landscape of Østfold and Follo, via Sarpsborg, Moss and Ås to Oslo, where Gudbrandsdalsleden takes over towards Trondheim. The name comes from Borg, the medieval name of Sarpsborg, and from the Borgarting, the ancient assembly of law that sat there. Along the way you pass eighteen churches, six of which are medieval, and traces from the Bronze Age to the industrial history of the nineteenth century. The trail alternates forest paths with country lanes and significant stretches of asphalt. You can sleep on farms, in pilgrim hostels, hotels and on campsites; the pilgrim season runs from early June to early September, but Borgleden can be walked from early spring to late autumn.
